Scleral melting secondary to surgical excision of a pterygium augmented with mitomycine C application.

چکیده
This 67-year-old female complained from recurrent pain in her LE, which had progressively increased in severity, followed by burning and foreign body sensation since 10 days before the appointment. She had a past history of local surgical excision of a nasal pterygium associated with Mitomycine C adjuvant application 7 years earlier. The general history revealed that the patient was only treated with atenolol for systemic hypertension. On presentation, her BCVA was 20/30 in RE and 20/400 in LE.

PURPOSE The authors report a case of fungal scleral keratitis and endophthalmitis as a complication of pterygium surgery. METHODS Case presentation. RESULTS A 46-year old woman underwent pterygium excision with topical use of intraoperative mitomycin C. By day 21 after excision, scleral melting was followed by fungal keratitis. Endophthalmitis ensued, which rapidly progressed, despite surgi...
متن کاملTailored treatment for the management of scleral necrosis following pterygium excision
The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of tailored treatment for the management of scleral necrosis following pterygium surgery. A series of nine cases of scleral necrosis following pterygium excision between September 2009 and September 2012 were included. In cases where ischemia was the cause of scleral necrosis, Tenon's membrane covering (TMC) surgery was performed. For cases wi...
متن کاملOutcome of surgical management of pterygium in Brunei Darussalam
Introduction: A pterygium is an elevated, superficial, external ocular mass that usually forms over the peri-limbal conjunctiva and extends onto the corneal surface. It is more common in the tropics secondary to higher exposure to ultraviolet light. This study compares the various techniques of pterygium surgery including bare sclera, conjunctival autograft, and conjunctival mini-graft (with or...
متن کاملBiodegradable collagen matrix (Ologen™) implant and conjunctival autograft for scleral necrosis after pterygium excision: two case reports
BACKGROUND Scleromalacia, in the form of scleral thinning, melting, and necrosis, is a potentially serious complication of pterygium excision. This study introduces a new biodegradable material, Ologen™ collagen matrix (OCM), to repair scleral thinning as an alternative to preserved scleral tissue, and evaluates the long-term outcomes of OCM for ocular surface reconstruction surgery. CASE PRE...
